I went shopping this week for some clothes — a rare occurrence. I overheard one of the cashiers as I looked through the polo shirt rack. He was hard to miss because his voice was loud. Whenever a customer approached, he would say, “Hey friend, how are you doing?” Then, he might comment on what they were purchasing and ask questions about weekend plans. His repertoire could have irritated me, but I was struck by how genuine he was. Yes, he was doing his job, but he was also connecting with people. Some wanted to scan their cards, grab their stuff, and get out. However, no doubt others left the store feeling better because someone saw them.
The difference we can make in others’ lives requires little effort. The biggest secret is that it improves MY life when I intentionally engage with others. It gets my mind off of me and my issues. Here are a few ideas you could try:
Surprise your spouse or significant other by doing something for them they’d never expect you to do. Open the car door, buy them flowers…love them how they want to be loved.
The next time you go to a coffee shop, make it your goal to make the barista smile before you leave.
On your morning walk, scroll through your text list and choose one person to send a voice text to. Let them know you’re thinking of them, and hope they have a wonderful day.
Send an actual card in the mail! I know this is radical, but it may land in someone’s mailbox just when they need it.
Small connections let people know that they are seen. Our deepest longing as humans is to be seen for who we are. Pick one person each day this week to bless. You may be the lifeline they need to have hope. I believe your week will be better as a result. Report back on what you learned. Make it an outstanding week!

A couple more notes:
Happy Father's Day to my dad! He is 87 years old and fitter than men half his age. He has impacted too many people to count through his years as an engineering professor. I am one of them. I wouldn’t be who I am today without him!
Yes, I think in song lyrics. I can’t help it.1
Thank you for always being my “biggest encourager” and the best dad for Sarah! Happy Father’s day ♥️
Great article Tarek... as usual. Lol! You gave me a challenge. I have a drawer full of cards. I was considering donating them somewhere. What if, instead, I send them randomly to people? 🤔 what a concept!
