Enjoy this 5-minute recap of one of my all-time favorite Seinfeld episodes: “The Big Salad.”1
Early in my career, I worked for a boss who went into a meeting and presented my work as his own. I had exerted all the effort, yet he took credit in front of his leadership. I spent a lot of time stewing on the unfairness of the situation.
It’s a human thing to want credit. When this happens, there are choices to make. We can fight back, complain, or suffer alone. There is another choice. We can focus on becoming a person who helps others win. This requires a change in perspective. Stephen Covey said:
Instead, I have an abundance mentality: When people are genuinely happy at the successes of others, the pie gets larger.
Abundance.
Living with your hands open to the opportunities you can create for others. If you lead people, are you giving away the credit or keeping it for yourself? Are you building an environment that helps others win and inspires their best work?
If someone takes credit for your work, let them keep it. It’s OK if you paid for the salad and no one recognizes it. It is, in fact, a BIG salad. Make it a great week!
