Listen to this post here!
Before we go any further, admit it. After reading the title of this post, you’re hearing that song. You know the one. Click this link for Celine’s definitive version, with 47 million views!1 Alright, on with this week’s blog.
You feel it, don't you?
That quiet whisper reminds you there's more to your story. It's the tension between who you are and who you know you could be.
It’s like you’re in a cage that you built. The familiarity of old patterns wraps around you like a well-worn, smelly old blanket.
Here's the truth: Those thoughts and comfortable routines aren't just habits - they're where you go to hide. They're the excuses you crafted over many years, the well-rehearsed stories about why,
"Now isn't the right time." Or worse yet,
"This is just how I am."
Let's get real - you've outgrown these stories. That’s why you’re reading Grow Yourself First. You are ready to write a new story that aligns with the potential you glimpse in your quietest, most honest moments.
When was the last time you did something intentionally outside of your comfort zone instead of playing it safe?
Think of the most profound transformations in your life. Chances are they involved someone who saw your potential before you recognized it yourself. Someone who refused to co-sign on your limitations, who challenged your self-imposed boundaries with compassion and some tough love. Who was it for you—a coach? A friend? A teacher? Or a parent?
I’ve been a member of a very special mastermind community for over a year. They help me overcome the lies I tell myself by holding up a mirror and helping me see how I truly show up in the world.
You need truth-tellers too — people who will show you how they see you and what you could be, not the limited person you’ve conditioned yourself to see.
Here are some ideas for how to break free from the intense gravitational pull of going it alone:
Assess Your Circle
Who are the five people you spend the most time with? Do they energize you and pull you up? Or do they make you feel good about your lack of effort?2
Notice whose presence makes you question your limitations and helps you believe you were made for more.
Create a Growth Ecosystem
Join a community that scares you with its level of ambition — a fitness class, an online mastermind, or a group coaching program.
Schedule conversations with someone who's walking the path you want to walk.
Establish New Patterns
Share your goals with your new inner circle and ask for support
Set up regular check-ins where you report on ACTIONS, not intentions
Create consequences for falling back into old patterns (make them public!)
Commit to Discomfort
Calendar three activities outside your comfort zone each month.3
Document your growth journey to track patterns and progress in a simple journal.
Celebrate small wins with your community, no matter how insignificant they seem.
Your future potential isn't waiting for more information, better timing, or perfect circumstances. It's waiting for you to surround yourself with people who won't let you play small.
Ready to stop defaulting to your old story in 2025?
Today is the day to start. Now is your time. The best is yet to come!
Thank you for reading, and let me know how I can serve you.
For one friend who struggled with depression, this was connecting with 3 people each week that she didn’t know at the grocery store, Starbucks, etc.
So so good. I have felt that pull very hard. It started right before Christmas. Christmas this year felt different.
When its finally Christmas Day, there is a tendency to feel like you've reached a destination. I felt so far from that this year. I had already begun feeling the pull into the new year but in a new way.
More than ever before, I don't want to waste a moment. Many of the things we say we "need" to do somehow fall by the wayside. By the end of the year this year I looked back and felt a little melancholy.
Don't get me wrong... so much happened this year that I'm so grateful for. But... what if... what if I was more intentional than ever for 2025 about what REALLY needs to get done, what would REALLY add value to my life, our life as a couple and to the lives of others in our circle? What will REALLY move the needle financially, physically, and spiritually for me/us? That's what I want to look back on next year.
It led me to my word of the year for 2025...STRATEGIC.
Thank you Tarek for being someone in my circle who speaks into my life.
I sang the song before I even got to the subheader...
But the blog - This might be my favorite one yet. Circle of influence, being uncomfortable, the lies we tell ourselves... Amazing! And a great Monday morning read.
