My wife Susanna loves plants. A year ago, she bought a money tree at a community event. Do you have one? It’s a low-maintenance plant that is pet-friendly and features beautiful braided stems. They can grow as tall as 8 feet indoors! However, ours hasn’t grown that much in the last year. Why is that?
The space its root system occupies limits its growth. In other words, it needs a bigger pot to expand!
If we repot the plant in a larger container, we will grow a bigger tree. However, there will be little upward growth during the first two months. During that time, the root system spreads and stretches out in its new home, growing deeper and stronger roots. After that period, the tree grows taller—up to 24 inches each year!
The newly expanded root system is expanding and increasing the tree’s capacity for growth!
So, how does this apply to you? Let me ask you this: It’s Sunday. Are you dreading going to work tomorrow? Are you thinking about the same unsolved projects and difficult people you have to work with? Are you working for NEXT weekend?1
Have you ever wanted your life to be different but didn’t know where to start? Personal growth is essentially a “repotting” of your brain. Intentional growth expands your capacity and ability to see opportunities in the world around you.
“Yeah, Tarek, I hear you talk about all this self-help crap, but I don’t buy it.”
Fair enough, I get that. I became interested in personal growth after realizing that living my way was a dead end. How is your way working for you?
Nothing happens immediately when we start working on ourselves by journaling, taking gratitude walks, reading new books, listening to podcasts, and opening ourselves to new ideas. However, your life can’t help but change over time as your roots expand and grow into uncharted territory:
You will start to see opportunities instead of what limits you.
You will show up differently with those we live and work with. People may wonder if you got on new meds. Just go with it!
You will think much less about what others think and more about fulfilling your potential.
The growth happening inside you starts to show up on the outside of you as you grow taller and more confident in who you are and how you were meant to show up in the world.
How might you begin repotting yourself this week? Pick one thing you want to improve in and
Do it on purpose with consistency.
Do it imperfectly. Celebrate the small victories along the way, and don’t beat yourself up when you fail!
Do it without knowing how things will turn out.
This week, I want to get 10,000 steps daily and three different weight-lifting sessions. I’m re-starting my journey to better health. I also plan to finish one chapter of the book I’m writing. Please hold me accountable!
What will you do to grow bigger on the inside? If you need ideas, I have them. Lots of them. Please reach out to me so I can add value to you.
Make this the week that puts you on a journey to the life you were always meant to live!
I'm giving myself the biggest challenge of my life today (and I will try to continue it all week). I'm going to say "Yes" to everyone (not myself)...Wish me luck (I have a toddler...)!
Now, if you’re writing the first chapter of your book while getting your work out in AND the steps, I’ll be impressed!
Very cool on the book. I look forward to seeing that progress.
I found it ironic that yesterday a friend told me he was impressed by my discipline to get my walking and weight lifting in each week. In addition to some running and biking. The irony is that he runs marathons! Gets in over 50 miles a week. I’ve never exceeded 2.5 miles running at once. I told him I was impressed with his discipline as I’ve never had the ability to focus on one thing and get that good at it. So I just use my freakishly short attention span to do a variety of things each week.
